Deep Copy Edit

This form of editing is variously referred to as Content Edit, Stylistic Edit, or Substantive Edit. This edit generally takes a significant investment in time for both the editor and the client. A Deep Edit includes the following:

  • Spelling
  • Punctuation
  • Grammar
  • Overused words and phrases
  • Unnecessary words and phrases
  • Verb tense confusion
  • Pronouns and antecedents
  • Weak verb (get/have/be) versus strong verb
  • Typographical Errors
  • Consistent style (assuming a simple, common style. If a style sheet is required, preparation of a style sheet is a separate fee, and style sheet compliance increases the edit rate.)
  • Style Sheet Compliance, if style sheet is provided
  • Diction (usage, word choice, including checks for cliche’, flowery language, jargon, slang and so forth)
  • Sentence clarity/artistic variety
  • General flow
  • POV issues
  • Logical coherent presentation
  • Textural inaccuracy (This edit is about obvious, common errors. It is not equivalent to Fact Checking, which is a separate service.)
  • Plot development — Fiction
  • Character development — Fiction
  • Organization — Nonfiction
  • Effective graphical presentation of information — Nonfiction

My standard rate for a deep edit is $.02/word. The rate may be increased if the manuscript includes a large number of images, footnotes, numerous tables or a large number of other business graphics.  If the manuscript review indicates that considerable rewrite will be required, I may recommend a custom process for your edit. See Other Services for the procedure and pricing. For prices and availability of additional services such as fact checking and style sheet preparation, see Other Services.
